Stanford-le-Hope is a small riverside town in the unitary borough of Thurrock in Essex, sitting on the north bank of the River Thames and well within commuting distance of London thanks to a regular rail link. The town occupies the edge of the Thames estuary and low-lying marshes, with nearby creeks such as Holehaven Creek and the mudflats that are important for wintering and migratory birds.
Historically a farming and market gardening community, the area’s character was reshaped in the 20th century by oil refining and heavy industry along the estuary - notably the old Shell Haven complex - and by later regeneration linked to the Thames Gateway. There are also interesting archaeological sites nearby at Mucking, and the town today mixes commuter suburbs, industrial estates and pockets of marshland nature, giving it a pragmatic, working feel rather than a touristic one.
