Sharlston is a small parish in the City of Wakefield, set on the eastern side of West Yorkshire not far from Pontefract. It sits on the fringe between former coalfield settlements and open countryside, so you get a mix of traditional terraced streets, post‑war housing and nearby green space that gives the place a semi‑rural feel despite being within easy reach of larger towns.
The village has a strong local identity shaped by its history as a coal‑mining community and by a handful of historic buildings and estates in the area. Since the decline of mining the economy has become more residential and commuter‑orientated, with local clubs, a village hall and small businesses supporting community life; regeneration and conservation of buildings and green corridors are ongoing themes for residents and local councils.
