Upton is a small village and residential suburb on the edge of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, sitting where town meets open countryside. Its name, from Old English meaning "upper farm or settlement", reflects a history as a rural community that gradually expanded with housing in the 19th and 20th centuries; today it offers a mix of older cottages and more recent family homes with nearby greenbelt and easy access to the wider Wakefield area.
The local life is quietly community-minded, centred on a village hall, primary school and a handful of local shops and pubs, while many residents commute into Wakefield or further afield for work. Although the immediate area is largely residential, traces of the region’s industrial-era past and the surrounding agricultural landscape are still visible, and residents benefit from good road links and proximity to Wakefield’s cultural and retail amenities.
