South Elmsall and South Kirkby lie in the south of the Wakefield district in West Yorkshire, forming a compact post‑industrial area that grew up around 19th‑ and 20th‑century coal mining. The landscape mixes rows of miners' terraces and community halls with pockets of reclaimed green space where colliery spoil has been landscaped, and both towns benefit from good road and rail links for commuters to Wakefield, Leeds and Doncaster.
Locally there’s a strong sense of community rooted in mining heritage - memorials, social clubs and brass bands remain part of civic life - while the economy is now more mixed, with retail, light industry and commuting jobs replacing the pits. Recent regeneration and active community groups have focused on improving facilities and creating leisure spaces, and sport and local events continue to be important social glue.
