Northampton sits in West Northamptonshire in the heart of England, straddling the winding River Nene. It has a long medieval core, a market tradition centred on the Market Square and the footprint of a Norman castle; the town also figured in national history with the 1460 battle of the Wars of the Roses and a great fire in the 17th century. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries it was famous for shoemaking and leatherwork, traces of which survive in museum collections and street names.
Today Northampton mixes historic streets and parks such as Abington Park with modern regeneration, a growing logistics and service economy and a lively cultural scene anchored by venues like Royal & Derngate and the University of Northampton. The town feels socially diverse, with regular markets, festivals and ongoing investment reshaping the centre while keeping visible links to its industrial and civic past.
