The civil parish of Woodford cum Membris sits in West Northamptonshire, in the rural heart of Northamptonshire, and is centred on the large village of Woodford Halse. It occupies gently rolling farmland and small hamlets, and its pattern of streets and housing was strongly influenced by the arrival of the railway in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Historically the Great Central Railway turned Woodford Halse into a busy marshalling yard and depot, leaving visible earthworks and railway-built terraces even after the line’s closure; today the parish combines agriculture, a modest local service and light-industrial base and a sizeable commuter population. Community life remains active around the village hall, church and sports clubs, and there are interesting historic touches nearby, including the earthworks of deserted medieval settlements such as Furtho and a scattering of traditional stone and brick buildings.
