The Adur district sits on the English south coast in West Sussex, wedged between Brighton and Worthing. It centres on the mouth of the River Adur and includes the coastal towns of Shoreham-by-Sea, Southwick and Lancing, with the rolling chalk of the South Downs rising to the north. The coastline, saltmarsh and estuary are important for wildlife and the district contains Shoreham Harbour, the long-established Port of Shoreham and Shoreham Airport, one of the country’s older airfields.
Historically a maritime and light-industrial area, Adur combines port activity with commuter links to nearby cities; recent years have seen regeneration around Shoreham Harbour with new housing and arts-led projects. Cultural highlights include the striking chapel at Lancing College and a lively local arts and music scene in Shoreham-by-Sea, alongside markets, watersports and accessible countryside that give the district a mix of coastal, community and commuter character.
