Shoreham-by-Sea sits on the south coast at the mouth of the River Adur in the district of Adur, West Sussex, England, backed by the rolling chalk slopes of the South Downs. The town has a long maritime and aviation heritage centred on Shoreham Harbour and Shoreham Airport, one of the UK's oldest aerodromes, and its shingle beach, historic tollbridge and riverside quay give a distinctly port-town character despite being sandwiched between larger neighbours like Brighton.
Today the local economy mixes marine trade, small-scale industry and a growing creative and leisure sector, with boatyards, galleries, independent cafes and pubs in the old town. Recent regeneration around the harbour has attracted artists and new businesses while the community retains a strong sense of local history, visible in landmarks such as the Old Shoreham Tollbridge and St Nicolas church, and a commuter link to wider employment centres via road and rail.
