Lavant is a largely rural parish set in the chalk valley immediately north of Chichester in West Sussex, England. The winterbourne River Lavant threads the valley, running seasonally across the chalk downland that forms part of the South Downs; the landscape is dominated by rolling farmland, hedgerows and wide views to the downs, with the stream liable to go dry in summer and flow strongly in wet months.
With medieval roots and traditional village centres, the parish retains a quiet, community-minded character: agriculture remains important, while many people commute into Chichester or work in nearby attractions such as the Goodwood estate. Goodwood’s race meetings and festivals bring a visible economic and social boost, and village halls, clubs and local events help maintain strong local ties despite the proximity of city amenities.
