Located in the southern part of the town of Crawley in West Sussex, Tilgate is a largely residential ward that grew up during the mid-20th-century New Town expansion. It is defined by the large public green space of Tilgate Park and the popular recreational Tilgate Lake, whose woodlands, lakes and nature areas make the ward a local focal point for walking, wildlife and family days out.
Historically the neighbourhood sits on the former Tilgate estate and forest and retains a strong sense of place around its parkland. Economically it is mainly a commuter and local-services area with many residents travelling to Gatwick Airport or London, while community life centres on schools, shops, sports facilities and volunteer groups that run events and modest regeneration schemes to improve housing and public amenities.
