Amberley is a compact, historic village and civil parish in the district of Horsham, West Sussex, set in the wooded Arun Valley beneath the chalk ridges of the South Downs. The settlement still shows a medieval heart of flint and thatch clustered around an ancient church and the moated, battlemented Amberley Castle, with low-lying grazing meadows and wetlands of Amberley Wild Brooks running down to the River Arun.
Its character is shaped by rural life and heritage tourism: the Amberley Museum & Heritage Centre preserves local industrial and transport history, while a small railway station on the Arun Valley line and a network of footpaths make it popular with walkers and visitors. Farming, hospitality and conservation of the surrounding downs and floodplain play an important part in the local economy and community life.
