Skelwith is a compact rural parish in Westmorland and Furness, set within the western fringes of the Lake District National Park. The landscape is intimate and varied – wooded valleys, limestone outcrops and the River Brathay combine with small waterfalls such as Skelwith Force, giving easy access to popular walks and fine views of surrounding fells.
The area is largely agricultural with a strong tourism element, seasonal holiday lets and small-scale hospitality serving walkers and nature lovers. Historic stone farmhouses and an old bridge at Skelwith Bridge speak to its rural past, while local life is quiet and community‑centred, relying on nearby centres such as Ambleside and Coniston for shops and services.
