Hawkshead is a compact, largely pedestrianised stone village in the southern Lake District, within the Westmorland and Furness unitary authority in England. Perched among wooded fells and small lakes, it sits close to Esthwaite Water and the Coniston and Windermere valleys; the village is famous for its cobbled square, narrow alleys, the parish church and the Old Grammar School where a young William Wordsworth was educated.
Today Hawkshead has a characterful mix of independent shops, tearooms and pubs, and a local economy shaped by tourism alongside traditional sheep farming. Its well‑preserved historic centre, National Trust properties and strong literary and Lakeland associations make it a popular base for walkers and anyone wanting an authentic slice of the Lake District countryside.
