The small market town and civil parish of Appleby-in-Westmorland sits on the banks of the River Eden in the Eden Valley, within the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness in England. Historically the county town of Westmorland, it retains a compact medieval core with the motte-and-bailey of Appleby Castle, the tall spire of St Lawrence's Church and the rolling hills of the North Pennines framing the town.
The local economy leans on agriculture, a traditional market and tourism, with independent shops, cafés and galleries catering for walkers and visitors. Culturally it is perhaps best known for the longstanding Appleby Horse Fair, a major annual gathering important to Romani and Traveller communities, and for a steady programme of local events that keep its historic character alive.
