Backbarrow is a small village in Westmorland and Furness, England, tucked into the steep-sided valley of the River Leven near Newby Bridge at the southern end of Lake Windermere. Its character has been shaped by a long industrial history – an ironworks and later aluminium works once dominated the settlement – and many of the old mill buildings and water-powered features remain as visible reminders of that past.
Today Backbarrow is part of the visitor hinterland to the Lake District National Park, with attractions such as the Lakeland Motor Museum and riverside walks drawing day visitors alongside a small local community of craftsmen and small businesses; the village strikes a balance between industrial heritage and the outdoor recreation that defines the wider area.
