Penny Bridge and Greenodd sit where the South Lakes spill towards the coast, with the little River Crake running out to Morecambe Bay and the fringes of the Lake District close by. Greenodd grew up as a small port and market village on tidal waters, its narrow streets and old inns hinting at a past tied to coastal trade and local industry, while the much smaller Penny Bridge began as a crossing point on the lane inland and takes its name from the tiny bridge over the river (reputedly linked to a penny toll in earlier times). Administratively they now lie in the unitary area of Westmorland and Furness, after historic county reorganisations that shifted much of Furness away from Lancashire.
Today both villages have a mellow, community feel: Greenodd attracts walkers, birdwatchers and people passing into the southern Lakes, with a few cafes, pubs and artisan shops serving visitors and locals, while Penny Bridge is largely residential and agricultural. The landscape - river, estuary and wooded hills - shapes local life and leisure, so history, wildlife and simple village commerce remain the defining features.
