Astley is a ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, within Greater Manchester and historically part of Lancashire. It sits on the outer edge of the urban area, with a mix of suburban streets and stretches of countryside, and is within easy commuting distance of both Manchester and Liverpool.
Once dominated by coal mining, the area still carries that industrial heritage in landmarks such as the Astley Green Colliery Museum, while nearby Astley Moss preserves a pocket of peatland and wildlife. Today the ward is largely residential with local shops, community clubs and pubs, and a strong sense of local identity shaped by its rural edges and mining past.
