Tyldesley and Mosley Common sit within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, historically part of Lancashire. The area grew up as an industrial community in the 19th century around coal mining and textiles - Mosley Common hosted collieries while Tyldesley had mills - and still shows traces of that past in terraces, former industrial sites and pockets of reclaimed green space that give the ward a mix of urban and semi‑rural character.
Today the ward is largely residential with local shops, community centres and sports clubs, and many residents commute into Manchester and neighbouring towns for work. A strong local identity survives in volunteer groups and community events that celebrate the area’s working‑class heritage, while nearby green corridors and moorland provide accessible outdoor space for walking and cycling.
