Tyldesley is a former industrial town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, historically part of Lancashire. It occupies a semi‑suburban patch of the north‑west, with terraces and pockets of greenbelt and former industrial land, and is within easy commuting distance of Manchester and nearby towns.
Built up by coal mining and cotton mills in the 19th century, Tyldesley still shows that industrial heritage in its streets and community institutions; today it combines local shops and light industry with a strong sporting and community culture (rugby league and brass bands feature locally) while ongoing regeneration has been steering it towards a more residential and service‑based local economy.
