Astley is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, historically part of Lancashire. It sits between Leigh and Tyldesley on the flat Mersey plain and is within easy commuting distance of Manchester and Wigan, giving it a semi-rural feel despite being part of the urban fringe.
Originally a rural settlement that expanded with the Lancashire coalfield, Astley retains its industrial heritage - notably at the nearby Astley Green Colliery Museum - alongside natural features such as Astley Moss, a patch of wetland valued for wildlife and local walks. Today it is largely residential with some light industry, village amenities and a close-knit community that reflects both its mining past and suburban present.
