Bickershaw is a small village in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester and historically part of Lancashire. It lies a few miles to the south‑east of Wigan town centre on the edge of the local urban area, close to neighbouring villages such as Abram and Hindley, so it sits where town and countryside meet.
The settlement grew up as part of the Wigan Coalfield, and like many nearby places its identity was shaped by mining and the industrial era; after the pits closed the area became more residential, with many people commuting to Wigan, Manchester or other towns for work. Today it retains a strong local community feel, with local clubs and amenities and a landscape where reclaimed industrial sites sit alongside green spaces and good road and rail links into Greater Manchester.
