Hindley Green is a residential and former industrial neighbourhood in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, within Greater Manchester and historically part of Lancashire. It grew up around 19th‑century coal mining and small-scale industry, and traces of that heritage remain in the local street pattern and community memory even as the area has become largely suburban with pockets of green space and allotments.
The ward today feels like a village on the edge of town, with local shops, schools, churches and active community groups shaping everyday life. While employment patterns have shifted away from heavy industry, the area retains a working‑class identity and close‑knit social networks, and it benefits from relatively easy access to nearby urban centres and surrounding countryside.
