Hindley is a former mill and mining town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, historically part of Lancashire in north‑west England. Set a few miles north of Wigan town centre, it grew rapidly in the 19th century around coal pits and textile mills, leaving a mix of Victorian terraces, chapels and a few surviving industrial buildings that hint at that industrial past.
Today Hindley is largely residential with a compact high street, community groups and local leisure facilities, and it serves as a commuter base with rail links from Hindley railway station into Manchester and the surrounding towns. Regeneration projects over recent years have aimed to revitalise retail and housing while local green spaces and proximity to the wider Wigan borough give residents easy access to both town amenities and nearby countryside.
