Wychavon

Local authority district in Worcestershire, England

Coordinates:52.18, -2.01
OS grid ref:SO 99 53

Wychavon is a largely rural district in central Worcestershire, lying on the fertile Vale of Evesham and skirting the eastern edge of the Cotswolds. It contains a string of attractive market towns and villages including Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich Spa, with the district council based in Pershore. The River Avon and a patchwork of orchards and market gardens are prominent features of the landscape.

There is a lot of history packed into the area: Evesham is associated with the 1265 battle and Droitwich Spa has a salt-producing legacy dating back to Roman times. Scenic highlights include Bredon Hill, a limestone ridge with archaeological remains, the designed landscape of Croome Court and the folly of Broadway Tower, which draw both walkers and heritage visitors.

Economically the district mixes traditional horticulture - plums, soft fruit and vegetables from the Vale - with light industry, food production and a strong tourism sector centred on country houses, walking and Cotswold villages. Many communities retain regular markets, local festivals such as Pershore’s plum events, and an active conservation ethos protecting listed buildings and rural character, while some residents commute to nearby Worcester or further afield.
