Clifton Without is a civil parish on the northern fringe of the City of York, its name reflecting that it sits outside the old city walls. Today it is a mixed suburban area combining post‑war and more recent housing with modern retail and business zones around Clifton Moor, and is well connected by the A1237 ring road for commuters into the city centre.
Alongside the built‑up parts the parish includes important floodplain and wildlife habitat such as Clifton Ings and Rawcliffe Meadows beside the River Ouse, popular for birdwatching and riverside walks. Historically agricultural land that expanded in the twentieth century, it now balances green space, local schools, community facilities and employment in retail and light industry.
