New Earswick sits just north of York and was created in the early 20th century by philanthropist Joseph Rowntree as a model garden suburb for workers. Designed around ideas of healthy living and community, it retains tree-lined streets, generous gardens and allotments, a small village centre and a sense of intentional layout that contrasts with nearby urban housing.
There remains a strong community ethos, influenced by the Rowntree Quaker tradition, with local organisations, a housing trust carrying forward the original social-housing purpose and active green spaces that link residents to the city. Today it’s a sought-after, mixed residential neighbourhood that combines historic social ideals with practical access to York’s amenities.
