Ballymurphy is an electoral ward and long-established housing area on the western edge of Belfast in Northern Ireland, located in what is commonly referred to as West Belfast. The neighbourhood sits among a mix of post‑war council housing, small shops and community facilities, with green spaces and local roads linking it into the wider urban fabric of the city.
Historically the area is best known for its strong community identity and for tragic events during the Troubles, notably the 1971 civilian killings that were the subject of a later public inquest. Today Ballymurphy is a largely working‑class area with active grassroots groups, murals and community projects aimed at addressing economic challenges and promoting cultural life, reflecting both enduring social difficulties and local resilience.
