Poleglass is a large suburban housing estate and electoral ward on the western edge of Belfast, Northern Ireland, developed from the 1970s onwards as part of planned social housing expansion. Its name derives from the Irish Poll Glas, often translated as “green hollow”, and the area grew rapidly with families moving out from inner-city neighbourhoods; the layout mixes terraces and newer housing with local shops, schools and community facilities.
Life in Poleglass is marked by a strong community identity, with active neighbourhood groups, sports clubs and cultural projects seeking to address local challenges and encourage regeneration. While the area has faced economic and social pressures common to many outer-city estates, it also benefits from green spaces at its edges and reasonable road and public transport links into West Belfast and the city centre, which shape everyday life and commuting patterns.
