Sydenham sits in east Belfast, on the shore of Belfast Lough and immediately adjacent to George Best Belfast City Airport, giving the area an unusual mix of coastal marshland and urban infrastructure. The nearby Sydenham Marshes form part of a recognised wetland that attracts birdwatchers and provides a green counterpoint to the busy harbour and airport.
The area is largely residential with pockets of light industry and retail, shaped historically by the shipbuilding economy nearby at Harland & Wolff and by dockland employment; good rail links via Sydenham railway station make it a convenient commuter suburb on the line towards Bangor. Recent years have seen modest regeneration around transport and retail, while the juxtaposition of nature, industry and aviation gives the community a distinctive character within Belfast and Northern Ireland.
