Newtownstewart is a small market town and electoral ward in the Derry City and Strabane district, set on the banks of the River Strule in west County Tyrone. It grew up in the Plantation era and still bears traces of that history in its street pattern and the remains of a fortified site nearby, while a compact main street and a bridge give the town a pleasantly historic character against a backdrop of rolling farmland.
Locally the economy is driven by agriculture and small businesses, with a close-knit community life centred on sporting clubs and local events; angling, walking and countryside pursuits are popular thanks to the river and surrounding hills. The town is also conveniently placed for larger centres such as Omagh and Strabane, making it a quiet but well-connected spot in the West of Northern Ireland.
