Maze sits within the Lisburn and Castlereagh area of Northern Ireland, just to the south‑west of Lisburn city. It is largely semi‑rural, with a mix of farmland, scattered housing and a few small commercial pockets, and benefits from good links to the major routes between Belfast and Dublin, making it popular with commuters as well as those working locally in agriculture and small businesses.
The ward is perhaps best known for the former Maze prison / Long Kesh site, a place of significant historical and emotional weight from the Troubles; events such as the 1981 hunger strikes and the 1983–85 escape have left a lasting legacy. In recent years the site and the wider community have been the subject of regeneration and commemoration discussions, reflecting a local mix of rural traditions, residential growth and sensitive debate about how to remember the past while encouraging economic renewal.
