Luing is a small, low‑lying island off the west coast of Scotland, within the council area of Argyll and Bute, and usually grouped with the nearby Slate Islands. It has a mix of rocky shoreline, sheltered bays and rolling pasture, and is reached by a short ferry crossing; the landscape is dominated by coastal views, grazing land and pockets of heath and scrub that attract seabirds and marine wildlife.
The island supports a close‑knit crofting community of only a few hundred people, with livelihoods traditionally based on small‑scale farming, fishing and more recently tourism and holiday lets. Luing is best known for the hardy Luing cattle breed developed there, and its history carries echoes of Gaelic and Norse influence and links to the wider slate‑quarrying economy of the surrounding islands, while offering good opportunities for wildlife watching, walking and sea activities.
