Seil is a small, low-lying island off the west coast of Scotland in the council area of Argyll and Bute. It sits among the group known as the Slate Islands and is linked to the mainland by the narrow nineteenth‑century Clachan Bridge, which crosses a tidal sound; the island’s rocky coastline, narrow roads and sea views make it feel characteristically Hebridean despite its easy road access.
Historically the island’s economy was shaped by slate quarrying, with villages such as Ellenabeich and Balvicar growing around that industry; the quarries and their stories remain a visible part of the landscape and local heritage. Today a small, scattered community combines crofting, fishing and aquaculture with tourism - visitors come for boat trips, kayaking, wildlife (otters and seabirds are common) and the quiet of island life, while local events and community amenities keep a lively social fabric.
