Tarbert in Argyll and Bute is a compact fishing village at the northern tip of the Kintyre peninsula in Scotland. Perched around a sheltered harbour and overlooked by the ruins of Tarbert Castle, it offers dramatic coastal views across the sounds towards Gigha, Islay and Jura, and its name - derived from the Gaelic for a portage or isthmus - recalls the old practice of hauling boats across the narrow strip of land.
Today Tarbert balances a working fishing and aquaculture industry with a lively tourist season that brings yachts, walkers on the Kintyre Way and visitors keen on fresh seafood, local arts and maritime history; the harbourfront still echoes the legacy of the 19th‑century herring boom while feeling very much like a convivial coastal community.
