Gretna sits right on the border in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, only a few miles north of Carlisle, so it has long been a gateway town on the main north–south routes. Its position gives a mix of busy transport links and a distinctly rural Border character, with nearby countryside and small settlements rather than a large urban centre.
It is best known for nearby Gretna Green, the famous destination for runaway weddings where Scottish marriage law once allowed eloping couples to wed quickly beneath the blacksmith’s anvil; that romantic history still drives much local tourism. The town also has an industrial past - notably the huge munitions works in the First World War - and today its economy blends wedding and visitor trade, retail and services, plus cross‑border commuting and shopping.
