New Cumnock is a small former mining town in East Ayrshire, Scotland, set among the rolling hills of the Southern Uplands beside the wooded glen of the River Afton. It lies on the A76 corridor and close to the border with Dumfries and Galloway, making it a quiet rural hub for surrounding farms and upland grazing.
The village has a strong industrial heritage centred on coal mining and the railways; the decline of those industries hit the local economy but also left an evocative landscape of pits, viaducts and miners’ housing. Culturally it’s famed for the link to Robert Burns’s song “Sweet Afton”, and today attracts walkers, anglers and people interested in industrial archaeology while community-driven regeneration and local events help sustain village life.
