Muirkirk is a small former mining village in East Ayrshire, Scotland, tucked into the valley of the River Lugar and fringed by upland moorland. The surrounding Muirkirk Uplands are designated for their peatland and heather habitat and attract walkers and wildlife enthusiasts for their specialist upland birds and wide open skies.
Historically the village grew up around 18th–19th century ironworks and coal mining, traces of which survive in the landscape as industrial archaeology. Today it feels distinctly rural, with farming, outdoor recreation and local heritage and community projects playing a bigger role as the area adapts from its industrial past.
