Cumnock is a market town in East Ayrshire, Scotland, set in the rolling river valleys of the Doon area where the Glaisnock Water and Lugar Water cut through the landscape. It sits inland from Ayr, surrounded by Ayrshire countryside and woodland, offering easy access to walking routes and a quieter, rural side of Burns country.
Historically the town grew up around coal mining, ironworks and associated industries in the 19th and 20th centuries; the post‑industrial decline had a marked social impact but recent years have seen regeneration efforts, community projects and a lively local arts scene (notably the Cumnock Tryst). Today it retains a strong sense of local identity, with museums, community centres and events that reflect both its industrial heritage and rural setting.
