Catrine is a small village in East Ayrshire, Scotland, sitting on the banks of the River Ayr in the rolling countryside of Ayrshire. It developed as a planned mill village around a substantial late‑18th/early‑19th‑century cotton works, and the surviving stone mill buildings, weirs and lade channels give a strong sense of its industrial origins.
After the decline of the mills in the 20th century the village became largely residential with many people commuting to larger towns, but there remains an active local interest in heritage and conservation; riverside walks, industrial archaeology and community groups keep a strong social life and attract visitors interested in Scotland’s industrial past set against rural scenery.
