Soay

Island in Highland, Scotland

Map of the UK

Soay is a small, rugged island off the south‑west coast of the Isle of Skye in Highland, lying among the sea lochs around Loch Scavaig in the Inner Hebrides. Its steep slopes and rocky shoreline give dramatic views towards the Cuillin ridge and neighbouring islets, with cliffs, caves and sheltered bays that underline its wild, coastal character.

Historically it supported crofting, grazing and small‑scale fishing but, like many small Hebridean islands, experienced depopulation and today has only a very limited or seasonal human presence. It is prized for wildlife - seals, otters and nesting seabirds - and for the sense of remoteness that draws boat visitors, naturalists and hillwalkers rather than regular tourism infrastructure.
