Sanndabhaig is a small crofting township in Na h-Eileanan Siar that takes its name from the Old Norse for “sandy bay”, a clue to the low-lying machair and shore that typically frame the settlement. The setting is characteristically Hebridean: windswept grasslands, wildflower-rich machair and easy access to the sea, with long views and often dramatic weather changes that shape both landscape and daily life.
Life in Sanndabhaig is shaped by crofting, fishing and a strong Gaelic culture; many residents retain the language, local traditions and practical skills such as peat cutting and small-scale agriculture. The area attracts birdwatchers and those interested in coastal ecology, and like much of the Outer Hebrides it bears visible traces of a Norse–Gaelic past alongside more recent crofting history.
