The Aber Valley is a small community in Caerphilly, Wales, encompassing villages such as Abertridwr and Senghenydd. It sits on the edge of the South Wales Coalfield at the foot of Caerphilly Mountain, with the Rhymney River and open uplands giving good walking and countryside access and views across the valleys towards Cardiff.
Historically the valley was shaped by coal mining - most notably the 1913 Senghenydd colliery disaster, Britain’s worst mining accident - and that industrial past is still visible in memorials and community memory. Since pit closures the area has become largely residential with local shops, clubs and volunteer groups, combining heritage remembrance with countryside recreation and commuter links to nearby towns.
