Holywell is a small market town in Flintshire, Wales, tucked into a steep-sided valley at the foot of Halkyn Mountain. Its best-known feature is St Winefride's Well, a spring and medieval shrine that has drawn pilgrims since the early medieval period and is often nicknamed the "Lourdes of Wales". The surrounding Greenfield valley and nearby hills give the place a mix of wooded riverside scenery and remnants of an old mining landscape.
Historically the town grew from pilgrimage and water-powered industry, with mills, paper works and nearby lead mining shaping its economy; today the Greenfield Valley heritage area interprets that industrial past. Holywell remains a local service and community centre with a strong sense of local identity, regular markets and events, and easy access to the wider North Wales coast and uplands for day visitors.
