Shaftesbury is an inner‑city parish in the western part of Newport, in south Wales, characterised mainly by mixed residential streets with a combination of Victorian terraces and later social housing. It sits close to the city centre, so local life is dominated by community amenities, schools and small shops serving a diverse population.
Historically the area developed with Newport’s industrial expansion, providing housing for workers linked to the docks and nearby industries, and traces of that heritage remain in the built environment. Today it benefits from ongoing regeneration and decent transport links into the city, while retaining a local community spirit and a number of active neighbourhood groups and churches.
