The area around Llangyniew and Meifod sits in rural Powys in mid-Wales, occupying the gentle, fertile valley of the River Banwy with rolling farmland, hedgerows and small woodlands. Meifod lies beside the river and the landscape opens up to long views towards the Berwyn Mountains, while the market town of Welshpool is the nearest local centre for shops and services.
Both settlements have deep roots - Meifod is known as an early Christian centre and each village retains medieval parish churches and historic lanes - but the everyday economy is very much modern rural: farming (sheep and cattle), a handful of local businesses, tourism and some commuting. Community life is active for a sparsely populated area, with village halls, pubs and voluntary groups helping to sustain local culture and bilingual traditions.
