Presteigne sits on the eastern edge of Powys, close to the border with Herefordshire in Wales, occupying a pleasant bend of the River Lugg. Historically the county town of Radnorshire, the centre still shows its civic past in a mix of Georgian terraces and older timber‑framed buildings, with a handful of notable civic and historic structures clustered around the main streets.
Today Presteigne functions as a small market town with a largely rural economy, local shops and artisan businesses, while tourism and walking in the surrounding hills bring extra trade. It has a surprisingly lively cultural life for its size - including an established annual classical music festival, galleries and small museums - and its borderland location gives the community a distinctive Anglo‑Welsh character and a close‑knit social scene.
