Hanmer is a small, rural village and community in Wrexham County Borough on the Welsh side of the Cheshire plain, close to the England–Wales border and within easy reach of Whitchurch and Chester. The settlement is dominated by the shallow glacial Hanmer Mere, a picturesque reed-lined lake that is valued for wildlife, walking routes and the sense of open space in an otherwise agricultural landscape.
Historically the area grew up around a manorial estate and retains a compact village core with the historic St Chad's Church and the nearby country house, Hanmer Hall. The local economy is still largely agricultural, complemented by small businesses, tourism and commuting to larger towns; socially it feels like a close-knit community with active conservation interests around the mere and a quietly proud local identity rooted in its borderland heritage.
