Bolton upon Dearne is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, England, lying on the banks of the River Dearne in the Dearne Valley. It sits between larger centres such as Sheffield and Leeds, so residents often commute to the nearby cities while enjoying a more rural riverside setting.
Historically a coal‑mining community, the village still shows traces of that industrial past in former pit sites and terraced streets, and like much of the area it experienced economic and social change after mine closures. In recent years local regeneration, community groups and the valley’s green spaces have helped reshape the place, with walking routes and nature areas nearby adding to its appeal for families and commuters alike.
