Goldthorpe is a former mining village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, set in the industrial-turned-rural landscape of the Dearne Valley. It has a local railway station on the Dearne Valley Line and sits among reclaimed colliery sites, green corridors and the terraces and housing estates typical of once-thriving coal communities.
Built around deep coal mining in the 19th and 20th centuries, Goldthorpe suffered economically after pit closures and has been the focus of regeneration, housing renewal and community projects ever since. Despite social and economic challenges the town retains a strong local identity and close ties with neighbouring settlements such as Bolton-on-Dearne and Thurnscoe, with local groups working to improve skills, services and leisure provision.
