Dearne South is a ward in the metropolitan borough of Barnsley, set within the wider landscape of the Dearne Valley in South Yorkshire. The area follows the course of the River Dearne through a former coalfield, and its patchwork of terraced streets, reclaimed industrial sites and newer green spaces reflects a transition from heavy industry to mixed residential and light commercial use.
Locally there is a strong sense of community rooted in mining history, with social clubs, local initiatives and heritage projects keeping that identity alive while regeneration schemes aim to boost jobs and amenities. Good transport links make it a manageable commute to Barnsley and Sheffield, and recent years have seen efforts to create nature reserves and community facilities on former colliery land.
